Based on previous project experience and an ongoing business relationship, Astral Media approached DEXD to design a digital feature element at Pearson Airport’s Terminal 1.

With an extensive history of collaborating with the (GTAA) on major project work at both Pearson’s Terminal 1 and 3, our team’s familiarity with the environment and surrounding context was beneficial to our development strategy.

Initial engagement included brainstorming sessions both with our client and internally, iterating ideas in a collaborative setting.

Part of understanding the challenges of creating a prominent digital display that is impactful, yet is in harmony with its surroundings, and not competing with passengers ability to wayfinding was of the utmost importance.

After several iterations, the final design solution: is successfully integrated within the existing architectural environment; is impactful and engaging to passengers approaching form multi-directions; creates a defined destination and promotes a moment of pause; offers a balanced sculptural element combined with an active digital display; can be easily fabricated and installed; is easily accessible and maintainable; is able to generate revenue and maximize opportunities; is memorable while maintaining a simple and straightforward form.

The end result is an attractive and impactful digital feature element that has the ability to function as both an advertising and creative interactive opportunity, offering a moment of pause, engagement, while heightening the experience along the passenger journey.
